Bilirubin metabolism.

چکیده
DURING the last ten years considerable advances have been made in our knowledge of the metabolism of bilirubin and thus in our understanding of the basic defects underlying jaundice, particularly in the newborn and in some types of familial hyperbilirubinaemia. These advances are due mainly to the characterization of 'direct' bilirubin as an ester glucuronide of bilirubin. Many of the classical concepts of bilirubin metabolism can therefore now be explained in chemical terms.

Twenty-five years of progress in bilirubin metabolism (1952-77).
This review deals with the development of our understanding of the chemistry of bilirubin and its glucuronide derivatives during the years 1952-1977. It examines the relation between haem metabolism and bilirubin formation and our present knowledge of hepatic transport of bilirubin. The heterogeneity of familial hyperbilirubinaemia is discussed.
متن کاملBilirubin metabolism in the fetus.
Bilirubin metabolism was studied in dog and monkey fetuses. Bilirubin-(3)H was administered to fetal animals in utero by prolonged intravenous infusion. Fetal plasma disappearance, hepatic uptake, biliary excretion, and placental transfer of bilirubin-(3)H were measured.Bilirubin metabolism and excretion in the fetus was much less efficient than in the adult. Fetal plasma levels of tritium were...
متن کاملMetabolism of Bilirubin by a Clonal Strain of Rat Hepatoma Cells
These studies demonstrate that the MH(1)C(1) strain of rat hepatoma cells has the ability to take up and conjugate bilirubin and then excrete the conjugated pigment into the culture medium. On incubation with unconjugated bilirubin, the average rate of appearance of conjugated bilirubin in the medium was 4.4 +/- 0.20 microg per mg of cell protein per hour (mean +/- SE). The products formed from...
متن کاملBilirubin Increases Insulin Sensitivity by Regulating Cholesterol Metabolism, Adipokines and PPARγ Levels
Obesity can cause insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Moderate elevations in bilirubin levels have anti-diabetic effects. This study is aimed at determining the mechanisms by which bilirubin treatment reduces obesity and insulin resistance in a diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model. DIO mice were treated with bilirubin or vehicle for 14 days. Body weights, plasma glucose, and insulin toler...
متن کاملDisorders of Bilirubin Metabolism
Bilirubin is the end product of degradation of the heme moiety of hemoproteins. Hemoglobin, derived from senescent erythrocytes, is the major source of bilirubin. Significant fractions are also derived from other hemoproteins of liver and other organs. Historically, hyperbilirubinemia has attracted the attention of clinicians as a marker of liver dysfunction. Subsequently, the studies of biliru...
